When discussing issues of hunger, we often use these biblical sources to cite our tradition’s concern for fighting hunger. However, we no longer live in an agricultural society, and the laws of reaping and tithing no longer apply. How do we make these texts relevant today? What can we do in our modern lives to realize the principles that underlie these laws?
This texts are relevant because we give tzadekah and volunteer. Also we go to a Jewish school, camp, and temple. At these places we are taught Jewish values like giving tzedakah.
The Torah recognizes certain categories of people who are particularly vulnerable: the Levite, the stranger, the fatherless, the widow, etc. What categories of people today require special assistance and our focused attention? Why?
The poor, homeless, elderly, and young require special assistance because they are either not as privileged as us or do not know how to do stuff for them self so it is our job as the next generation to help them.
Explain the tension between Deuteronomy chapter 15 verses 4 and 11, found in the same chapter in Deuteronomy.
That there shall be no needy among you because you will help them all and when you help someone they will help someone else which will make it a Circle of kindness.
If we accept an obligation to care for the needy in our society, does that mean that we have to do it without regret for our own financial loss? Do you personally feel that you are able to give without regret or hesitation?
When you give charity or tzedakah to a place that is tax deductible then you will get a tax deductible so you will not have that much finical loss. If you really feel like you will have big finical loss you should volunteer in stead of giving money.
I am proud that we finished the sukkah and it looks amazing. Our time and energy have payed off. Our class made an amazing finished sukkah through our teamwork. I am very proud at my work on the Jerusalem skyline mural. I am very proud that I found the idea of the mural on Pinterest. I am also very proud that there was no fighting in picking which sukkah and which parts of the sukkah design we should make.
I think the most challenging thing for me was combining my prototype group with another prototype group. It was challenging designing witch slideshow to use or if we should just make a new one all together. This was challenging because we both had already made a slideshow and both groups liked there slideshow. We had to pick which groups slide we would use. At the end we came to a conclusion of making a whole new one and it turned out to be an amazing slideshow.
There are a few things I would change about the sukkah project. The first thing is that I think we should of took more photos of the building project. The second thing is I wish we would have worked on the artwork and the actual building at different times. Since I was in the artwork group I do wish I got to use the tools more.
My effort so far in Jewish studies has been 3.5 because I worked through difficulties. I also finished my task on time and complete. I worked well with my groups, and gave full effort to our prototype and presentation. I did get distracted a little bit when we were working on the slide show. I may have taken control of my group at the beginning but I think as the time want on I did not as much. I think we should of thought the structure of the sukkah out better and focused less on design.
My achievement so far in Jewish studies has been 4 because I finished the prototype on time. We completed and presented our presentation. We presented our presentation to another group and fixed our presentation when we got feed forward from the other groups. I achieved everything we needed to do.
Our sukkah model is made of cardboard and pipe cleaners. It is an Israel entrance. Are model is 8 by 8 and 4 inches tall. One of the inside walls is a skyline of Israel and another wall is a map of Israel. On the outside it is a stain glass MJDS sign. We started by cutting 8 by 4 inch rectangles. Then we started designing the walls. We used pipe cleaners for a model of the schaz’k.
I think I am already good at flexibility because I am flexible with changing my idea. I always work towards a solution because the end result of all teamwork is making a solutions and getting you’re work done. I was flexible when we liked the other groups ideas so we combined as one group. I almost of the time make sure that the other group members agree with my ideas.
I think I am bad at work load. I sometimes like to take in charge and give me the main thing. I sometimes dominate making me the leader. Though I am good at getting my work done and turned in on time.
Our
sukkah is 16 by 16. We picked this height because the panels come in 8 by 4. So this would be great to make. We love Israel so much so we decided on the inside to make a fabulous and colorful painting of the skyline of Jerusalem. This mural will transport to feel like your sukkah is right outside the gate of the old city. Another group had a great idea of making the entrance shaped like Israel and having MJDS on the outer wall in glass. We liked these ideas so we combined our sukkahs.
Al shlosha d’varim means the world stands on three things. The world is supported on these three things. The world stands on Torah. The world stands on religion. Torah is the reason you do stuff every day. Work or study because without work nothing would happen. When you work you accomplish things and get stuff done. The world also stands on kindness. Everything you say should involve kindness. Everything you do should be an act of kindness. These are the three guiding principles that the world rests on.
On the top of this list I want to learn all of the curriculum for this year and prefect my group working skills. I want to perfect my group work by making sure that I let other people have a turn to talk.My plan for this school year is to get good grades in my classes and succeed. One failure we had was in Science while doing our genius hour projects.I learned that you have to make things more than once in order to succeed sometimes.
